Keyboard or Mouse Not Working

Troubleshooting Guide

If your keyboard or mouse is not responding, it may be caused by loose connections, driver issues, USB port problems, or hardware faults. Follow the troubleshooting steps below to identify and fix the problem.

Step 1: Check Physical Connections

  1. Ensure the keyboard or mouse USB cable is properly connected to the computer.

  2. If you are using a wireless keyboard or mouse, check that the USB receiver (dongle) is properly inserted.

  3. Try connecting the device to a different USB port.

  4. Make sure the device cable is not damaged or bent.

Step 2: Restart Your Computer

  1. Click Start Menu.

  2. Select Restart.

  3. After restarting, check if the keyboard or mouse works normally.

Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary system or driver issues.

Step 3: Check Wireless Device Batteries

If you are using a wireless keyboard or mouse:

  • Replace the batteries with new ones.

  • Turn the device OFF and ON again.

  • Make sure the receiver and device are paired correctly.

Step 4: Test with Another USB Port

  1. Disconnect the keyboard or mouse.

  2. Connect it to another USB port on your computer.

  3. Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect the device.

If it works on another port, the original USB port may be faulty.

Step 5: Check Device Drivers

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.

  2. Expand Keyboards or Mice and other pointing devices.

  3. Right-click your device and select Update Driver.

  4. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

Updating drivers can fix compatibility or performance issues.

Step 6: Check for Windows Updates

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Select Windows Update.

  3. Click Check for Updates.

Install any pending updates and restart the computer.

Step 7: Test with Another Computer

Connect your keyboard or mouse to another computer.

  • If it works on another computer, the issue may be with your system settings or drivers.

  • If it does not work, the device may be faulty.

Step 8: Replace or Repair the Device

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, the keyboard or mouse may require repair or replacement.
